Why You Should Grow Autoflowering Cannabis at Home

Autoflowering cannabis plants flower automatically, regardless of light cycles, and modern cultivars are stronger, more reliable, and higher quality. They can be grown indoors, outdoors, or in greenhouses, and consistently deliver excellent results, even for first-time growers. Beginners should consider growing autoflowering cannabis to see firsthand why these plants continue to generate so much excitement in the growing community.

Outstanding Quality

Modern autoflowers rival photoperiod cultivars in every way. In a blind test of end product, it would be nearly impossible to tell the difference between flowers grown from autoflowering plants and those from photoperiod (light pattern-dependent) genetics.

Thanks to advanced breeding, today’s autos deliver impressive resin production, rich terpene profiles, strong cannabinoid content, and top-tier overall quality. Over the last 10 years, the quality of autoflowering cannabis has skyrocketed.

A Wide Range of Auto Varieties

Autoflowers are available in an enormous range of genetics, offering diverse effects, aromas, flavors, flowering times, and yields. For beginners, this variety makes growing autoflowering cannabis especially exciting.

Experimenting with multiple varieties allows new growers to learn how different traits express themselves, and, as a bonus, you will end up with a cupboard full of curing jars, each with its own exciting flavors and experiences.

Keeping a Low Profile

Autoflowers are especially popular for discreet cultivators. Most autoflowering varieties grow to a couple of feet (under a meter), making them easy to hide or blend in with other plants outdoors.

They’re also perfect for balconies, rooftops, or small gardens, allowing growers to cultivate without drawing unwanted attention from neighbors or passersby. Indoors, autoflowering cannabis is a wise choice for growers working with small grow spaces where height may be limited.

Perpetual Outdoor Harvests

In regions with consistently mild and temperate weather, autoflowering cannabis can be grown year-round, making it possible to achieve multiple harvests a year at lower cost.

While yields may dip slightly during wetter seasons, autoflowers still allow for consistent, back-to-back harvests. Outdoor sea of green (SOG) setups in greenhouses or polytunnels are especially effective for maximizing output in limited space. My advice is to plant new autoflowering cannabis plants every 30 days to achieve the best perpetual harvests possible.

Resilient Performing Plants

Autoflowering cannabis truly shines when grown indoors under 18–20 hours of strong light. Some growers even choose to run 24 hours of light from seed to harvest; however, for the sake of electricity bills and maintaining temperature and humidity levels, it may be best not to run more than 20 hours of light per day.

Ideal for First-Time Growers

Autoflowers are ideal for beginners because they require very little experience. Unlike photoperiod plants, autoflowering cannabis grows in a vegetative stage for about 30 days before naturally transitioning into flowering regardless of the light cycle.

All a new grower really needs to do is plant the seed in a sufficiently sized pot, water regularly, and let the plant handle the rest. There’s no need to worry about changing light schedules or complex training techniques. You may want to consider low-stress training autoflowers for enhanced yields.

Minimal Maintenance Required

One of the biggest advantages of autoflowers is their low maintenance requirements. While photoperiod plants can grow very large during long vegetative light cycles, autos typically remain short, stocky, and compact before stretching and focusing on flower production. In many cases, there’s no need for staking or additional plant support, making autoflowers a stress-free option for first-time growers.

Tough and Resilient Plants

Autoflowers are naturally hardy and well-suited to outdoor growing, even thriving in colder climates. They can handle wind, heat, and cold, and are more resistant to common threats such as mold, powdery mildew, and other pathogens.

This resilience gives growers peace of mind, especially in environments where conditions aren’t always ideal, allowing you to knock out two back-to-back outdoor harvests. Although this may not result in the highest yields, the flowers will still be high-quality and worth the time and investment.

Grow Autos Alongside Photoperiod Plants

Autoflowers make a great companion to photoperiod plants. Indoors, they can flower in the vegetative room while photoperiod plants continue growing. Outdoors, autos can be harvested earlier or alongside photoperiod plants planted during summer.

A great tip for outdoor growers is to plant photoperiod varieties during the spring and plant back-to-back autoflowering varieties between  May and September, ensuring you are never short of anything to harvest and will have plenty of different cultivars ready to dry and cure.
